16th Book Across the Bay

Get ready to ski or snowshoe by the stars and candlelight across Lake Superior.  Book Across the Bay is this weekend February 18th at 6PM.

The race begins in Ashland at the Hotel Chequamegon and ends near Thompson's West End Park in Washburn.  Participants are asked to leave their cars near the finish line and take one of the shuttle buses from 2:30PM-5:30PM to the start line.  Last year's event had 3,800 skiiers and snowshoers, so get there early - this year over 4,000 are expected to join in the fun.

Ski by Candlelight

If you like to cross-country ski, the weather lately has been cooperating and many trails have been open and folks have been getting out and enjoying the white winter scene.

This Saturday you can get out and ski at night - by candlelight! Four events are being held around the state so you can enjoy the trails in the tiny firelight glow.

The Lake Kegonsa State Park Candlelight Ski in Stoughton will be January 8th (with a second event February 12th) from 6PM-9PM. Enjoy the 2 mile trail through woods and prairie then warm up by the bonfire. Grills will be available or you enjoy drinks and baked goods provided by the LKSP Friends Group. Sorry, no pets, and a park admission sticker is required.

You can head to Wildcat Mountain State Park in Ontario January 8th from dusk to 9PM for a Candlelight Ski on 1.5 miles of cross-country trail. You'll find a bonfire at the midpoint waiting to warm you, then a cup of hot chocolate when you finish. If you wish to cookout there will be a hot grill and bonfire available. For more fun spend some time looking at the stars through telescopes with Professor Bob Hirschy and John Heasley.

Cross County Skiing By Candlelight - Lake Delton

BY LORI RACKL Travel Editor Chicago Sun Times
LAKE DELTON, Wis. — The temperature was a teeth-chattering minus 1, and the sun had called it a night a couple of hours earlier.
But bitter cold and darkness weren’t about to keep these 100 or so hardy souls cooped up inside. They’d driven to southwest Wisconsin’s Mirror Lake State Park for an evening of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing by candlelight.
