The Easter Holiday Date

Easter is upon us, and whether you celebrate with an early Church service, a basket filled with colored eggs and chocolate, a big family dinner, or all three, planning for this day can sometimes be hassle. After all, how do you know from year to year what day Easter will fall?

The basis for the date has it origins in religious celebrations. The formula is actually very simple, and was set by an edict by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD; Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox - the first day of Spring. So once you know the first day of Spring, which can fall anytime between March 20th - 22nd, then you find out when the first full moon after it, then the next Sunday is Easter. Simple - if you study astronomy!

Most of the time Easter falls on the first week in April. The earliest Easter can fall is March 22nd - which will happen in 2285. The latest is April 25th - that will occur in 2038.

In case you need to plan ahead - Holiday.net has a little calculator to let you know what day Easter will fall. Just put in a year and see the date. Check it out. When is Easter?
